This award recognises excellence amongst our rural and regional practitioners, going to an individual displaying excellence, innovation and leadership in their field and community. This person is committed to service of their community and goes above and beyond to ensure access to justice in regional and rural NSW.

2022 Winner: Courtney Colwell, Principal Solicitor, Lovett & Green, Warren

Courtney Colwell has been recognised for her service to community and for ensuring access to justice in regional and rural NSW. Colwell is a Director at Lovett & Green Solicitors in Warren, NSW. She practises in rural property and water conveyancing, estate and succession planning, and commercial and agribusiness law.

Colwell is passionate about delivering excellent legal services to regional areas through the use of technology. The judges also noted her commitment to practitioner recruitment and retention in her region.

“There’s a real shortage of lawyers in the bush,” said Colwell. “Only ten per cent of lawyers work in rural and regional areas, even though 26 per cent of Australians live in those same areas, so lawyers are in high demand.”

Colwell encourages all lawyers to consider practising in regional areas. She praises the positive culture inherent in regional firms, the cheaper cost of living and the “laid back, tight knit community”.

“I love working with young farming families who are achieving incredible things in their careers,” said Colwell. “My favourite part of the role is working with clients from the early stages to structure their legal entities with their goals in mind to protect their assets for their family’s future.

“It’s very rewarding to have a real impact on people’s lives.”

The Law Society of New South Wales, President and Council congratulate Courtney Colwell on this achievement.
