This award recognises a mentee whose values of ethical conduct, professional excellence and contribution to supporting their peers or their community set a great example to other members of the profession.
2022 Winner: Xin (Jillian) Fu, PhD Candidate School of Psychology and Brain & Mind Centre – USYD
There are many reasons law student Xin (Jillian) Fu is a worthy recipient of the 2022 award, not least her willingness to face challenges and to commit fully to any opportunity for self-development.
Fu has knowledge and skills in both the legal and medical areas, as well as in research and international study. With this multifaceted experience, she has the ability to apply multiple perspectives.
She trained in China and the UK, and has a background in clinical medicine, applied psychology and psychiatric research. She is currently a PhD candidate in the School of Psychology and Brain & Mind Centre at the University of Sydney, and her research interest is in the subtlety and complexity of memory changes in both clinical and healthy aging population. Her particular focus is on the interdisciplinary approach of delineating the neurocognitive profile of memory.
Fu was commended by the judges for embracing the challenges and overcoming her self-doubt about joining the legal profession. “She willingly took on suggestions from her mentor and put herself out there, embracing the hard questions,” they said.
This year’s winner was also commended for her commitment to the experience of being a mentee: she was well prepared for each mentoring session, demonstrating her desire to succeed and to make the most of her mentoring experience.
The judges noted that Fu would be an asset in the future as a mentor to others in her position, especially those from a culturally and linguistically diverse background.
The Law Society of New South Wales, President and Council congratulate Xin (Jillian) Fu on this achievement.
