Running season is ramping up in NSW, with events including the City2Surf and Sydney Running Festival fast approaching. If you’re hoping to run your first marathon but not sure where to start.

What do I know about marathon running? I ran 40 marathons before turning 40, including four 50-kilometre races and two 100-kilometre races. In 2011, I trained 101 first timers to run the Sydney Marathon, and in 2018 I trained 52 people to run the New York City marathon.

I have trained people aged between 16 to 65 years old, many of whom had never run more than 2km in their life. In my experience, any reasonably healthy person can run the 42.2km event. Here are my tips on how you can survive and thrive in your first marathon.
