Work is out of control at the moment and I am really craving the summer break. Is this a sign I need to change jobs?
I speak to a lot of people at this time of year who are, quite frankly, frazzled. Work heats up, the end-of-year parties heat up, and the weather heats up, creating a perfect storm.
While I don’t think it’s necessarily a sign you need to jump ship, it might be a sign that you need to think about doing things differently, and it’s definitely a sign that you need to take a step back and consider the bigger picture of your career.
To help get you through to the summer break, try some of these tactics:
1) Go to bed 30 minutes earlier and get up 30 minutes earlier. Use that time to set yourself up for the day – exercise, meditate, journal, watch the news, read the paper – do whatever works for you and helps you hit the day with the right attitude and energy.
2) Eat well. If you find it hard to shop and cook due to lack of time, use some of the healthier pre-prepared options now available.
3) Try to get time to yourself at the weekend. You can’t work 24/7, make sure you recharge your batteries when you get the chance.
4) Speak up and ask for help. When it comes to starting the year afresh, over the summer break take time out to think about why you are doing what you do – does it still meet your needs and wants?
Consider how you would work differently. Do you need to put more boundaries in place and learn to say no more often instead of taking too much on? Use the holidays to build and thank everyone in your support team. Work out ways you can help each other when things get so busy. Keep going and look after yourself – and enjoy your summer break. You deserve it.
