Practitioners may be aware that each year, the Law Society of NSW conducts an annual compliance audit for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) pursuant to rule 14 of Legal Profession Uniform Law Continuing Professional Development (Solicitors) Rules 2015 (CPD rules).

The annual CPD Compliance audit for the CPD year 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024 will commence in September 2024.

CPD compliance and record keeping

Pursuant to CPD rule 6, unless exempted in whole or in part, practitioners must complete 10 CPD units with at least 1 unit in each of the following mandatory fields:

  • Ethics and professional responsibility;
  • Practice management and business skills;
  • Professional skills; and
  • Substantive law.

Practitioners selected for the audit will be required to provide details and evidence in support of their compliance with their CPD requirements for the activities completed in the CPD year 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024. Practitioners are reminded that it is a requirement pursuant to CPD rule 12 that practitioners must maintain for each CPD year:

  • A record of their engagement in CPD activities; and
  • Evidence in support of the CPD activities undertaken,

for at least three years after the end of the relevant CPD year.

Notice of participation in the CPD compliance audit will be sent via email to practitioners.
