Richard Beasley SC has been appointed as a judge of the Land and Environment Court of NSW.
Admitted as a barrister in 1997 and appointed as Senior Counsel in 2011, Beasley has established a reputation as a revered lawyer in environmental issues as well as commercial and administrative law matters. His past experience includes advising on major planning matters such as Barangaroo and the redevelopment of Allianz Stadium.
Beasley was Commissioner of a number of public inquiries including the Auburn City Council Public Inquiry in 2016, Blue Mountains City Council Public Inquiry in 2018 and he was Senior Counsel assisting the Murray Darling Basin Royal Commission in 2018-19. His other notable positions include Senior Counsel assisting the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Ruby Princess in 2020 and Commissioner for the Special Commission of Inquiry into NSW Healthcare Funding in 2023-24.
In announcing the appointment, Attorney General Michael Daley said, “In almost three decades in law Mr Beasley has advised on many environmental issues, including urban planning and mining approval matters, and a royal commission.
“His vast experience in the field of environmental law will be an asset to the Court.”
Beasley, who holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Adelaide and a Master of Laws from the University of Sydney, is also a published author. His novel ‘Hell has Harbour views’ was adapted for ABC television in 2005.
Beasley will be sworn in on 17 March 2025.
