Continuing its annual tradition, the NSW Young Lawyers Environment and Planning Sub-Committee will be holding its fundraiser trivia night on Friday 29 August 2025. Stepping into the role of quiz master this year will be 2024 Golden Gavel Finalist Samuel Chu, who is an Associate at Dentons. All proceeds from the night will be donated to the 2025 NSW Young Lawyers charity ‘Project Youth.’
As a charities and education lawyer, Chu is particularly passionate about donations for a good cause. “[I] love that Young Lawyers supports a charity every year because it’s a sort of a rallying around the flag … for a good cause,” he says.
He jokes that “[D]onations are tax deductible.” “[I]’m currently actually putting together a tax advice on public benevolent institutions and public benevolent institutions are an interesting concept under the tax law because they are essentially the ordinary meaning of charity, right?” he says.
He stresses that pro bono is important in the profession and it’s important for lawyers to contribute to the community irrespective of whether the attendees practise in charity law. “There’s that need to commit to pro bono and commit to the community … and this is just a great way to do it,” he says.
Chu is a self-proclaimed trivia buff and admits to watching ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ when he was younger. “[I]’d be keen to compete, probably not on planning and environment law … I don’t know what they’ve prepared but I’m happy to not be competing. …
“[I]’m happy just to be up on stage because this is the first young lawyers’ event where I don’t actually feel any pressure. This is the first young lawyers’ event where I can just stand and just help people have a good time and that’s what it’s all about right?” he says.
He encourages people to register and attend the trivia night as it’s a great opportunity for young lawyers to meet new people and join in on the fun. “What’s not to love?” he asks.
