Proposals to increase voter engagement, participation and confidence

The Public Law and Indigenous Issues Committees contributed to a submission to the NSW Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters in relation to its inquiry into proposals to increase voter engagement, participation and confidence.

In this submission, we commended the work of the NSW Electoral Commission in ensuring high voter enrolment and turn-out levels in the 2023 NSW election. We encouraged the expansion and assessment of targeted and evidence-based initiatives by the NSW Electoral Commission to ensure an informed electorate across NSW’s broad demographic. We also supported an emphasis on civics education in primary and high schools, encompassing critical thinking and digital and media literacy, particularly in light of the threats posed by misinformation and disinformation.
