LSJ Online asks Accredited Specialists why they embarked on the Program and their advice to others who are considering applying. This month we speak to Lillian Ajuria, Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law.

Why did you undertake Specialist Accreditation?

I undertook Specialist Accreditation to formally recognise the work I was already doing day-to-day. Immigration law is complex and fast-moving, and I wanted a credential that reflected my level of experience and commitment to the area, both for clients and within the profession. I also saw it as an opportunity to challenge myself and to test my knowledge and approach to practice against a rigorous, independent standard.

What did you gain from completing the Program? And what did it teach you?

The Program forced me to step back and really interrogate my knowledge and approach to practice. It strengthened my technical understanding, but also improved how I analyse problems, structure advice, and explain complex issues clearly. It reinforced the importance of precision, preparation and consistency. It also reminded me that the core skills we use as lawyers every day — learning the law, applying it under pressure, and being tested on our reasoning — are exactly what the Program demands.

When did you know it was the right time to undertake the Program?

I knew very early in my career that I wanted to specialise in immigration law. After graduating, I worked across different areas of practice, but once I began practising in immigration law, it was clear to me that this was not just a specialty, but a long-term career choice. I undertook the Program as soon as I was eligible and met the requirements to participate.

Now, as a more established practitioner, I understand why the Law Society sets clear parameters around eligibility. The Program requires a depth of experience and practical skills that can only be developed over time, including several years of focused practice in the area.

What are the benefits of being an Accredited Specialist?

Being an Accredited Specialist provides independent recognition of expertise in a complex area of law. It builds confidence and trust with clients, supports professional credibility, and assists with referrals from other practitioners. As an employer, it also helps attract a team that is genuinely passionate about immigration law and wants to develop as subject-matter experts. It encourages ongoing professional development and reinforces a commitment to maintaining high standards of practice.

What changed for your after you achieved Specialist Accreditation?

Achieving Specialist Accreditation brought recognition of my commitment and passion for immigration law. It is a demanding area to dedicate a career to, requiring constant engagement with legal change, policy shifts, geopolitics and global events. Accreditation acknowledges the depth of specialisation required in this field and gives me a platform to focus my practice on this area with confidence and purpose.

How has being an Accredited Specialist impacted your daily practice?

Being an Accredited Specialist has made me more disciplined about staying across legal and policy developments in a constantly changing area of law. It has strengthened my role as a recognised expert in Australia and overseas, including opportunities to represent the profession internationally through conferences and professional engagement. It has also helped attract talented practitioners who are serious about developing deep expertise in immigration law. On a day-to-day level, it reinforces a sense of responsibility — to clients, the profession and the integrity of the advice I give.

What is the best advice you would give to someone who is considering undertaking Accreditation?

It is an arduous process, so only commit to it if you are willing to prepare thoroughly and are genuinely passionate about the area you practise in. Undertake Accreditation because you want to develop deep expertise and truly understand your subject matter — not simply for the title at the end of your name. I would also strongly recommend collaborating with other practitioners when preparing. It not only strengthens your understanding through shared knowledge and discussion, but is also a valuable way to build professional relationships within your area of expertise while preparing together for the assessment process.

What was the best part about participating in the Program?

Not only the recognition as a Specialist but the process itself. It was challenging, but it made me a better lawyer. The reflection and consolidation of knowledge was as valuable as the final outcome.
