LSJ Online asks Accredited Specialists why they embarked on the program and their advice to others who are considering applying. This month we speak to Evatt Styles, Accredited Specialist in Dispute Resolution.
Why did you undertake Specialist Accreditation?
It is the stamp of approval that matters.
It matters because it demonstrated to myself, clients and to others, that I am an expert in resolving complex commercial disputes through negotiation, litigation, mediation, arbitration and expert determination.
What did you gain from completing the Program? And what did it teach you?
I gained three unique assessment opportunities to apply my knowledge, experience, and to showcase my ability to navigate real commercial dispute resolution issues.
My clients and network gained the understanding that when they reach out to me to help them solve a complex commercial issue – that it will be communicated effectively, that the strategy will be robust and that there will be a plan that focuses on their desired outcomes.
When did you know it was the right time to undertake the Program?
- Read the Law Society of NSW Assessment & Requirements Guidelines.
- Talk to other Accredited Specialists.
- Attend the Law Society of NSW – Q&A Session.
That said, when you know you know!
What are the benefits of being an Accredited Specialist?
Where do I start? Putting aside the great sense of accomplishment and opportunity to develop your skills (as well as more CPD training), it instils a sense of confidence, develops keys skills and it is the start of a remarkable journey of professional growth.
How has being an Accredited Specialist impacted your daily practice?
I constantly challenge myself to lead by example, to demonstrate best practice as best I can, and to continuously improve my work, others, and the community at large.
What is the best advice you would give to someone who is considering undertaking Accreditation?
Watch Meet the Specialists – Evatt Styles – Dispute resolution on YouTube – The Law Society of NSW. I did that five years ago.
Do you think my passion for commercial dispute resolution has changed? Is that how you want to feel about going to work and the profession? If so, apply now.
