Respected barrister Stephen Free SC will be appointed as a Judge of Appeal of the Supreme Court of NSW.

Free commenced his legal career as a graduate lawyer at Mallesons Stephen Jaques and he later practised as a solicitor at the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office. He was called to the Bar in 2006 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2018.

Free has a successful practice specialising in public and commercial law matters, regulatory matters and appellate advocacy. He has acted in some of Australia’s most noteworthy constitutional and commercial cases. He recently appeared for ICAC in the Court of Appeal in Berejiklian v ICAC and he has acted in a number of prominent cases. Free has also appeared in a number of royal commissions and commissions of inquiry.

Outside of law, Free is a member of the Appeals and Disciplinary and Ethics Committees of Football Australia.

“Stephen Free SC brings a wealth of experience from his work across some of the nation’s most complex and high-profile legal matters”, says Attorney General Michael Daley.

“He is widely regarded as one of the leading silks in the country and known for his intellectual rigour, sound judgment and a deep commitment to the law.

“I expect he will make a significant contribution to the court and the people of New South Wales…,” says Daley.
