Saranpaal Calais once drew a picture of himself as a white kid with a cool haircut. Today, he works hard to promote his religion’s values among young Sikhs and to balance his law commitments with community service.
As a child in primary school in Hobart, Saranpaal Calais’s turban made him stand out – and he didn’t like it. As an adult, he stands out because of his commitment to helping Sikh youths appreciate the richness and value of their faith, instead of being uncomfortable with it.
Calais, a senior corporate lawyer at Allen & Overy, is national operations director of Sikh Youth Australia (SYA), and co-founder of the Young Sikh Professionals Network (YSPN).
