Senior members of the NSW Supreme and Federal Courts were on hand to congratulate the first graduates of a new program to encourage Indigenous law students to become barristers.
The Chief Justice of NSW Tom Bathurst AC, Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia James Allsop, and President of the NSW Bar Association Arthur Moses SC were among the judges and silks who presented Certificates of Completion to three law students who were the first to complete the NSW Bar Indigenous Clerkship Program on 21 February. The three student clerks, Kate Sinclair, Tyrone Kelly and Ryan Barratt, had the opportunity to shadow members of the NSW Bar, and the Federal and Supreme Courts, where they completed research tasks, observed barristers’ work, and attended court.
“We hope this collaborative program will encourage Indigenous law students to complete their studies and go on to pursue a career in law,” said Una Doyle, Director of Education at the Judicial Commission of NSW. “If the proficiency of this group is any indicator, the profession will be all the richer should they choose to join.”
