Criminal Justice Reforms
The Criminal Law Committee contributed to a submission to the Shadow Attorney General and Cross Bench members summarising the Law Society’s concerns with Bills on early guilty pleas, sentencing, parole and high risk offenders.
The Law Society has been involved in on-going consultations with the Department of Justice on the areas of law covered by the various pieces of legislation since early 2016.
The Greens moved amendments to the parole and early guilty pleas Bills consistent with the Law Society submissions; however, the Bills passed without amendment and received assent on 24 October 2017.
The reforms will take effect from early to mid-2018.
