Every year has its defining crime thriller; think Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, and The Woman in the Window. Adrian McKinty’s latest novel looks set to be that book for 2019 and with its sometimes cold but always clear-headed protagonist, Rachel, we may finally have a welcome reprieve from the unreliable narrator trope so presently beloved in the genre. The Chain holds you in a vice-like grip and does not let go until you emerge, breathless, 350 pages later.
